Field Maiden Flight Protocol & Checklist

Save your plane from unforced pilot errors. Work through these 10 inspection checkpoints before applying power for your first hand launch. Changes are saved automatically to your device for offline use at remote airfields.

Field Inspection Protocol

Pre-Flight Maiden Checklist

Complete all 10 checks at the airfield before hand launching your newly built aircraft.

Checklist Status: 0 of 10 completed0% READY

1. Center of Gravity (CG) VerifiedAerodynamics

Aircraft balances horizontally or with a 2-3° slight nose tilt on designated balance fingertips.

Never maiden a tail-heavy airplane; it will stall and pitch uncontrollably.
2. Control Surface Directions CorrectElectronics

Right stick pushed right raises right aileron. Pulling back on elevator stick raises the elevator up.

Reversed ailerons or elevator guarantee an immediate ground strike upon release.
3. Propeller Numbers Face ForwardPre-Assembly

Manufacturer numbers and text on propeller face towards the front of the aircraft (flight direction).

4. Propeller Nut / Collet Securely TorquedPre-Assembly

Prop nut is torqued down firmly on motor shaft so prop cannot spin loose under rapid throttle changes.

5. Radio Transmitter Failsafe ProgrammedElectronics

Turning off transmitter cuts motor power to 0% immediately. No runaway motor risk.

6. Pushrods & Control Horns LockedPre-Assembly

Z-bends and pushrod linkage stoppers are locked tight with no mechanical play or slop.

7. Flight Battery Strapped SecurelyPre-Assembly

Battery pack is held tightly by Velcro strap and cannot shift forward or aft during aerobatics.

8. Motor Thrust Angle (Right & Down)Aerodynamics

Motor mount has built-in 2° right and 2° down thrust to counteract propeller torque.

9. Wind Speed Below 8 km/h (Calm Air)Launch Field

Leaves are still or barely fluttering. Maiden flights should always be conducted in glassy, calm air.

10. Launch Technique: Level Toss into WindLaunch Field

Launch firmly straight into the wind at 65% throttle towards the horizon. Do NOT throw nose-up.

Golden Rules of the Maiden Hand Launch

1. Throw Into the WindNever launch with the wind behind you (tailwind). Heading into headwind provides free airspeed lift over the wings from moment of release.
2. Flat Horizon TossAim for a gentle point on the distant horizon. Do not pitch upward like a spear; throwing high causes an immediate low-speed tip stall.
3. Throttle at 65%Full 100% throttle causes excessive motor torque twist on light foamies. 65% power provides ample climb without rolling the airplane.
