Foam Cutting, 45° Bevels, and Hinge Taping Mastery

Building an RC foam plane starts with clean cuts, accurate score lines, and durable hinges. A loose or sloppy control surface can lead to aerodynamic flutter and lost control during flight. Follow this guide to prepare your laser-cut sheets and assemble slop-free hinges.

Essential Tools Checklist

  • Utility Knife or Hobby Scalpel (X-Acto #11): Ensure you use brand-new, razor-sharp blades. Dull blades crush and drag the foam core.
  • Metal Ruler: Never use plastic or wooden rulers with a hobby knife; the blade will shave the edge.
  • Reinforced Fiber Tape or Heavy-Duty Packing Tape: 3M Blenderm or bi-directional fiberglass tape is ideal for control hinges.
  • Fine-Grit Sanding Block (240 to 400 grit): Used to smooth cut edges before taping.
  • Low-Temperature Hot Glue Gun: High-temperature guns will melt polystyrene foam cores!

Step 1: Cutting Tabs from Laser-Cut Foam Sheets

All VT Aircraft foam kits feature precision laser-cut sheets held together by tiny retaining tabs:

  1. Lay the foam sheet completely flat on a self-healing cutting mat.
  2. Locate the retaining tabs connecting parts to the carrier sheet.
  3. Place your razor blade straight down onto each tab and slice vertically. Do not twist or pull the blade horizontally, as that can tear the paper facing.
  4. Gently pop the parts out from the foam carrier sheet.

Hobbyist Tip: Number your parts with a soft pencil before popping them out to easily track left/right wing halves and fuselage formers.

Step 2: Cutting 45-Degree Control Surface Bevels

A control surface (aileron, elevator, rudder) must deflect upwards and downwards without binding against the fixed wing or stabilizer:

  1. Mark a line 5mm back from the hinge line on the underside of the movable surface.
  2. Hold your utility knife at a steady 45-degree angle.
  3. Rest the blade against your metal straightedge and slice along the line, removing a 45-degree triangular wedge of foam while leaving the top paper layer intact.
  4. Test deflection by folding the surface back: it should freely swing through at least 40° in both directions without binding.

Step 3: Installing Zero-Slop Fiber Tape Hinges

  1. Clean both surfaces with a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust.
  2. Lay the control surface against the wing with a 1mm gap (the thickness of a credit card).
  3. Apply a strip of fiberglass-reinforced tape along the top side of the hinge line, smoothing down from center to tips.
  4. Fold the surface completely over (180 degrees) onto the wing.
  5. Apply a second strip of tape to the inside bevel groove, pressing firmly into the V-notch.
  6. Exercise the hinge 20 times to achieve silky-smooth movement without stiffness.

Step 4: Reinforcing Trailing Edges

To prevent your wing trailing edges and aileron corners from dinging during rough grass landings, wrap a strip of 20mm clear packing tape around each corner. This adds negligible weight while quadrupling structural durability.
